What Is TURP?
TURP (Transurethral Resection of the Prostate) is a common and effective surgical treatment for BPH — Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia, or an enlarged prostate.
The procedure removes the extra prostate tissue that’s pressing against your urethra and blocking the flow of urine. It’s done without any external incisions — everything is performed through the urethra.
Why You Might Need TURP
If you’re experiencing:
-
A weak or slow urine stream
-
Difficulty starting or stopping urination
-
Frequent or urgent need to urinate (especially at night)
-
Feeling like your bladder doesn’t fully empty
-
Recurrent urinary tract infections or bladder stones
TURP might be the next step if medications aren’t helping enough or symptoms are affecting your daily life.
How TURP Works
-
A thin instrument called a resectoscope is passed through the urethra (no cutting through the skin).
-
A small wire loop uses electric current to trim away extra prostate tissue.
-
This opens up the urethra and restores normal urine flow.
What to Expect
Before the Procedure:
-
You may need blood tests, a urine test, or a prostate ultrasound.
-
Your doctor will give you instructions about eating, drinking, and medications.
During:
-
Takes about 60–90 minutes.
-
You’ll be under spinal or general anesthesia, so you won’t feel any pain.
-
No incisions — everything is done through the penis.
After:
-
A catheter will be placed to help drain urine for a day or two.
-
Most patients go home the same day as the procedure. You may stay in the hospital for 1–2 days, depending on your recovery.
Benefits of TURP
-
Significant improvement in urine flow
-
Long-lasting symptom relief
-
No external cuts or scars
-
Proven track record with decades of success
Common Side Effects (Usually Temporary)
-
Mild burning or blood in urine for a few days
-
Temporary difficulty controlling urination
-
Retrograde ejaculation (semen goes into the bladder — harmless, but affects fertility)
Your doctor will discuss any risks or rare complications, like infections or bleeding.
Recovery Timeline
-
Back to light activity in 1–2 weeks
-
Avoid lifting heavy objects or intense exercise for about 4 weeks
-
Full healing may take up to 6 weeks, but most feel much better much sooner
