Kidney masses are commonly found by accident on radiology tests done for other reasons. Symptoms may include a palpable lump in the abdomen, bloody urine, or pain. Not all kidney masses are cancer.
Diagnostic tests can include:
- Blood work
- CT scan or MRI
- Chest x-ray
- Bone scan
- Percutaneous biopsy
Your urologist can give you information regarding the likelihood of cancer, the stage, and prognosis.
There are several personalized management strategies:
- Active surveillance (observation)
- Percutaneous needle ablation with either cryotherapy or RFA (radiofrequency ablation)
- Surgical removal with:
- Open or Robotic assisted laparoscopic surgery (minimally invasive)
- Kidney sparing (partial nephrectomy) or total kidney removal (radical nephrectomy)
