A Quick, In-Office Procedure to Evaluate Your Bladder and Urethra
Cystoscopy is a simple, minimally invasive procedure that allows your urologist to view the inside of the bladder and urethra using a thin, flexible tube called a cystoscope. It is one of the most effective ways to diagnose causes of blood in the urine, urinary symptoms, or to evaluate the bladder after prior treatments.
At Fore River Urology, we often perform cystoscopy at the same visit as your initial consultation if appropriate and there is available time, saving you time and providing peace of mind faster than many practices that require multiple appointments.
Why Is a Cystoscopy Done?
Cystoscopy may be recommended to investigate:
- Blood in the urine (microscopic or visible)
- Frequent urinary tract infections (UTIs)
- Painful urination or burning
- Bladder pain or interstitial cystitis symptoms
- Urinary urgency or frequency
- Difficulty starting urination or weak stream
- Bladder tumors, polyps, or stones
- Follow-up after bladder cancer treatment
How Is Cystoscopy Performed?
The procedure is usually performed in our office using a flexible cystoscope and local anesthesia. The procedure itself typically takes 3-4 minutes.
What to Expect:
- You’ll be asked to empty your bladder prior to the visit (and to provide a urine sample).
- Often, a sterile gel with a local anesthetic is squirted in the urethra to minimize discomfort.
- The cystoscope is gently inserted through the urethra into the bladder.
- Sterile fluid may be used to fill the bladder slightly to allow for better viewing.
- The bladder and urethra are examined in real time.
Nitrous Sedation Option (Available by Request)
For patients who are especially anxious or sensitive to discomfort, we offer in-office nitrous oxide sedation (also known as “laughing gas”). This option must be scheduled in advance and includes an additional fee, but patients find it helpful in making the procedure more comfortable. Most patients do not require this, as the procedure can be irritating, but not overtly uncomfortable.
After the Procedure
Most patients experience minimal recovery time. It’s common to have:
- A mild burning sensation with urination for a day or two
- A small amount of blood in the urine
- Slightly increased urinary frequency for 24–48 hours
We recommend drinking extra fluids after the procedure. Most patients can return to normal activities the same day.

- Same-day consultation and cystoscopy for most patients
- In-office nitrous sedation available (by request)
